Pair of Broom Corn Reindeer

Pair of Broom Corn Reindeer

These pairs of stag and doe reindeer are made of broom corn (Japanese sorgham) straws and hemp yarn. Based on the art of vernacular broom making, these figurines are tightly woven and would enjoy long life.

Each pair comes in a special handmade box tailored for them. A perfect Christmas gift for both children and their grown-ups. They would look great on the mantle, or easily perch in the Chrismas tree with their long legs.

Free gift wrapping (brown tissue paper + paper yarn) available.

The maker, Kibigara Kobo (meaning, broom corn studio) is one-woman operation by Sanae Masukata. She is the 3rd generation Kanuma style broom maker, crafting in the way she learned from her father and grandfather.
At the time when the demand for brooms had declined drastically, Sanae's father, who was a keen collector of folk toys, invented woven figurines of the Chinese zodiac animals made of corn straws. Originally for making use of the excess stalks, these figurines are now very popular themselves.

Sanae has a strong passion to carry on this otherwise extinct traditional craft, but only in the sustainable way that she feels it is right. The broom corn she uses is all organically and responsibly grown by herself and a few other farmers in the area.
